Christos Anesti Ek Nekron
May 14, 2007 by kevinburt
Well, Pascha is almost over….ending this Thursday with the Ascension of our Lord. Next Sunday is Pentecost. Every year, it amazes me to think that at this very time, so very long ago, the Apostles and others were still likely struggling to comprehend this new existence of the Lord….. bodily present, yet with a body so different, capable of appearing, reappearing, passing through closed doors, etc. It is a struggle that we all continue to have, a struggle with the implications of this new existence of the Lord for our own lives.
My friend Maximos Greeson sent me a link to “Christos Anesti” as sung by monks at St. Anthony’s Greek Orthodox Monastery in Arizona. There is more in the recording than simply this hymn, but the whole recording is absolutely and beautifully transcendant. Click here for English transliteration and translation of the chief hymn of Pascha. And click below to hear the troparion hymn:
“Christos Anesti” Enjoy! (Update 5/08: CLICK HERE for updated 2008 Pascha with even more video and audio links!)
We buried my father last Wednesday - you cannot describe the comfort to my soul it was to sing the “Christo Anesti” along with everyone else as we brought my father’s body into the Church for services, then again to begin the service, then again to end the service, then once again at the the graveside.
It was a comfort beyond description - and hearing the audio file you’ve been so kind to share has helped me get past some mournful memories of his recent passing.
Blessings to you!
I absolutely love this song. Do you have the words to it in the English translation? I only understand a few of the words.
Thanks!
Gisele,
Look above in the post. There is a link to the translation. It says “Click here for English translation.” Glad you enjoyed it. It is beautiful, isn’t it! Also, you might want to see the videos I posted two days ago. Click on the “update for 2008″ link above in the post, and you’ll find four videos, all featuring this troparion!
Christos Anesti! Christ is risen and has bestowed life!
