Neural Buddhists..... :)

I think you are right, that Orthodoxy may be more able than many to engage emerging understandings of mind/body/spirit/soul.

The mystics of all religions, when they realize God say the same things.

We are more able to realize God, tho, in our own traditions.

Much as I love Advaita and Buddhism, I would not function well under those umbrellas. I was first, and will be last a Christian.

Though I love and respect those other paths.

I listened to this as well, and find your description apt. His thoughts on the current state of the righteous departed, being "somewhat resurrected" (I lack a better description), I found to be somewhat perplexing. I'd like him to clarify. All in all though, I am finding myself more and more interested in his podcasts. If for no other reason, his sincere love for Christ bubbles out in his voice, and brings me a smile.

Also, you might want to see the videos I posted two days ago. Click on the "update for 2008" link above in the post, and you'll find four videos, all featuring this troparion!

Thanks!

Steve,

I think I understand you to be saying simply that an "essay" this brief cannot exhaust or fully treat the Church's understanding of clergy and laity? If so, then yes, it is quite brief and naturally unable to completely exhaust such a rich area of the Church's life.

You did not find anything erroneous about it, though, did you?

warmly,
Kevin

While that is true, I don't think it define's the Church's understanding of clergy and laity, or even Fr Alexander Schmemann's.

Anglican Churches (in England anyway) had a Table of Kindred and Affinity with whom one was not allowed to marry. At the top were two headings: "A man may not marry" and "A woman may not marry", followed by a list of about 30. It began with "A man may not marry his grandmother" and "A woman may not marry her grandfather".

But it would be silly to take that as the essence of Christian teaching on marriage.

So with Fr Alexander's statement. It's tyrue, but it does not convey the truth about clergy and laity.
